Flash MX: An Introductory Workshop This is an interactive workshop in which participants will learn the fundamentals of Flash to develop interactive multimedia materials. The learner will be introduced to new content, shown examples of important features, and given an opportunity to practice the skills. Participants should be competent computer users, but knowledge of specific computer applications is not required. This is an introductory workshop on the use of Macromedia Flash MX. It was successfully presented at both the Atlanta and Dallas AECT Conferences. The workshop is an intensive, fast paced introductory examination on the use of Macromedia Flash, the dominant design software for the internet and stand alone multimedia presentations. The introductory session will take the learner through the basic tools, the general concepts and ideas of Flash and will create a series of Flash pieces linked through a common central web page. Actionscript and animation principles will be introduced. All learners will receive the printed handout and a CD with example files and installers for Mac and PC. |

Electronic portfolios are one of the most exciting innovations in technology-enhanced learning. Now with the creation of the Minnesota Efolio Project, supported by the Minnesota State Colleges and University System (MNSCU), and Avenet, a Minnesota based company, all Minnesota residents have a fun, free, easy to use tool for creating professional, online portfolios. This hands-on workshop will introduce you to the Minnesota Efolio and help you begin your own electronic portfolio. We will discuss some basic questions about efolios, including:
Participants will be able to register and begin construction of their own portfolio in the workshop. Bring disks or CDs with your CV or resume, pictures, and documents to insert into your portfolio. You will leave the workshop with the beginnings of an electronic portfolio and the knowledge of how to complete and maintain it. |

Revisioning Your Course for the Online Environment Teaching a class online or augmenting a traditional course with online tools requires more than just facility with a course management system. In the online environment you communicate with students in a different medium. Your pedagogical style and insight are still the roots from which the learning experience grows, but the online course holds different potentials and pitfalls that must be negotiated. In this hands-on workshop we will engage both the pedagogical and technological challenges of developing a creatively revisioned course. Participants are encouraged to bring syllabi and materials from a course they would like to bring online. We will begin with a brief presentation that reviews the capabilities of online courses and outlines a process for reviewing your course. Then we will break into smaller groups to discuss our courses and trade ideas for converting them. When the group reconvenes we will share our insights and look for common insights and concerns. Finally, we will shift to a computer lab where each participant will have their own Blackboard course to try out their ideas. |

Carol Gersmehl, Instructor of Geography, Macalester College | Making maps using websites and using free or low-cost "GIS" software Are you interested in having students examine the characteristics of communities using images and using graphs or maps based on census datasets? Would you like to know how to map census data for anywhere in the U.S. or environmental data for anywhere in Minnesota? This workshop will provide examples of student work and tutorial handouts for mapping via websites and via free GIS software. This workshop has two purposes: First it will demonstrate purposeful use of several website for mapping. Wedsites associated with the U.S Geological Survey (Terraserver and Topozone) allow us to acquire orthophotos and topographic maps for most locations in the U.S. At the U.S. Census website, we can map census variables and also download data for the 1990 and 2000 census. At Minnesota's Datanet website, we can create population pyramids and also maps using census data for MN. We will treat this first section briefly through examples of student work and through take-home tutorials Second, the workshop will address two types of free or low-cost software. Software called the Minnesota Environmental Atlas is available for free to schools and at low cost to others. This "atlas" provides more than 200 data layers about MN and is a simplified, easy-to-learn GIS (Geographic Information System) software. ESRI (maker of ArcView GIS software) also provides free software called ArcExplorer. We will show examples of student work, provide tutorial handouts, and address how to acquire software. |
