About the Presentations

3M-TV
As a global corporation, 3M faces the difficult challenge of communicating efficiently and in a timely manner with its staff. 3m-TV is a recently established telecommunication network which connects 3M sites together through the use of satellite, computer and internet technologies. 3M-TV is used for employee training, corporate communication, and continuing education.
Caucus
John Vinton will discuss the issue of building robust learning communities online using the latest web-based conferencing technology, using this presentation.
Elements of Infastructure and the Success of a Technology Grant
In 1996, Macalester College and Carleton College proposed to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that the two schools receive a consortial grant to (1) increase the efficiency and effectiveness of student learning in foreign languages through the application of electronic technologies, (2) assess curricular objectives, and (3) seek cost-effective means to implemment and sustain the use of electronic technologies in our programs. In order to meet these goals certain structures had to be established to support them. The structures that emerged were human, financial, informational and, of course, technological. This talk will address some of the dimensions of each of these catagories.
Hilacha
The Center for Multimedia Development was established at St. Thomas in 1995 to support faculty projects in multimedia. This session will premiere the first product of the CMD, Hilacha. This project builds comprehension skills in reading and listening in Spanish through the use of video vignettes, crossreferenced with text script. various grammar and vocabulary lessons and exercises supplement the main activity.
Information from the Internet: What Can We Trust?
At present, there is little control over the quality of information found on the Internet. The major evaluation is user evaluation. This presentation covers several ways to evaluate information found on the Internet.
An Introduction to Classroom Websites: the Syllabus
A syllabus (and more) will materialize before your very eyes. Samples of the instructor's websites include the Learning Center and Webtruth
One Camera Works
Vivid videos can be made with just one camera. This session combines watching several short videos made by people from preschoolers to adults with hands-on production of a new video created on the spot using in-camera editing techniques, live improvisation, and teamwork. This session teaches learn-by-doing experiments along with diverse aspects of media literacy.
Planning the Infrastructure
Augsburg College is completing a new Library and Information Technology Center. The College of St. Benedict and St. John's University have successfully linked their campuses electronically. The University of St. Thomas is planning a new Science and Engineering Center in St. Paul and a School of Education in Minneapolis.
Student Information Bases
During the spring of 1997, Professor Pielemeier authored and made available to his Mass Media Law students electronic course materials, using FolioViews software provided free of charge to the law students by Lexis-Nexis. These electronic course materials included multimedia during class. Professor Pielemeier's presentation will include a demonstration and some discussion of teaching with electronic materials.
